Nothing makes a person more miserable than living underneath the dark cloud of anxiety and stress. Without proper stress management, you may feel like the world is against you or that life is just too overwhelming to bear. Fortunately, though, these thought patterns can be reversed. A happy life free of harmful stress and anxiety is possible if you just reach out for it.

What Is Stress and Anxiety?

Stress and anxiety are natural responses to the world in which we live. In most cases, stress and anxiety are beneficial to us. For example: The stress of owing money to the utility company and the anxiety over what will happen if you do not pay what you owe will prompt you to work and pay your bills on time. In most cases, this stress is slight and is not bothersome, but it can become overwhelming if circumstances make it impossible to pay your bills. When stress begins to affect your emotions and physical being adversely, stress management is needed.

There are many ways that you can tell if you need to implement a stress management strategy in your life. One of the most obvious ways is to look for physical signs of stress. Here are some of the most common physical signs of stress:

  • Headaches
  • Aches and pains
  • Digestive problems
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heartbeat
Not only do stress and anxiety affect you physically, they affect you intellectually, emotionally, and behaviorally as well. Some other signs that may indicate that you need stress management in your life include: memory lapses, confusion, depression, mood swings, neglecting responsibilities, and changes in sleep patterns.

Stress and Anxiety: Adverse Effects

If you fail to recognize the signs of stress and anxiety and implement a good stress management program, you may experience negative consequences. Over time, unbearable stress can adversely affect your health. Stress can make it more difficult for your body to fight off infection and to heal from an injury which leaves you vulnerable to a myriad of health concerns. In fact, experts believe that more than 2/3 of all illnesses can be directly linked to stress. Here are just a few of the health conditions that can be brought about by stress and anxiety:

  • Depression
  • Substance abuse
  • Ulcers
  • Heart attack
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Eating disorders
  • Obesity
  • Digestive issues
  • Thyroid problems
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Infertility
  • Insomnia
How to Combat Stress and Anxiety

Effective stress management is not that hard to achieve. In many cases, it merely involves a change in the way you think or taking the time to take care of yourself. Here are four easy ways that you can combat stress and anxiety in your life:

  • Goals and expectations – Many times stress is brought about by unrealistic goals or expectations that you have for yourself. Taking on more work than you can handle or berating yourself for not completing an impossible project on time can have a negative impact on the way that you manage stress. Stress management requires that you know your limitations and set realistic goals for yourself. Learn to say no when a request is more than you can handle.
  • Health – When you are in poor health, stress and anxiety affect you more profoundly. Be sure to get plenty of sleep and address any illnesses and health concerns that you may have. Exercising and taking care of your body has a great impact on stress management.
  • Diet – Certain foods such as those that are high in sugar or beverages that contain caffeine can add to your stress level. They can also leave you feeling tired and drained which only makes it harder to deal with stressful situations when they arise. Avoid consuming these foods and also avoid foods that trigger sluggish and irritable feelings which may sabotage your stress management efforts.
  • Time out – It cannot be expressed enough how important it is to take some time out of each day for yourself. Carve out 30 minutes of quiet, alone time each day that you can use to do your favorite activities.
Stress management is not that complicated. All it takes is a little thought and preplanning. And since a ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, take measures to reduce stress and anxiety in your life before they start to affect your health.
