It's easy to overlook the little annoyances around you, isn't it? By not "sweating the small stuff," this contributes to the buildup of stress. Often, it's the little things that cause most of the stress you go through. And if left untreated, they may lead to illnesses and depression.

Self-tests like the following are relatively effective methods in finding out if you're prone to stress or if you're already pushing yourself to the point where you're compromising your health.

Instructions: Rate each item from 1 to 4, 1 being "rarely" (or never) and 4 being "always."

1(rarely) - 2(sometimes) - 3(often) - 4(always)

1. Do you get at least 8 hours of sleep each day? (Include naps.)
2. Do you avoid having to work overtime?
3. Do you actively take steps to keep in shape?
4. Are you financially stable?
5. Are you able to socialize with ease?
6. Is your weight in proportion to your height?
7. Are you able to manage your time effectively?
8. Do you take enough time from your schedule to relax?
9. Do you take time to pursue a hobby?
10. Are you free of chronic disease?
11. Are you able to limit how much alcohol you drink a week?
12. Do you avoid smoking?
13. Do you regularly meet with a group of trusted friends?
14. Do you have a healthy relationship with a significant other? (or family, if you have none)
15. Do you eat healthy?
16. Do you set practical limits to how much work you can handle?
17. Do you think of problems as challenges?
18. Are you able to reach goals you set for yourself?
19. Are you comfortable in the place you live in?
20. Are you able to easily adjust to changes in your environment?

Score interpretation:

35 and below: You are probably pushing yourself too hard, and your body may no longer be able to cope with the stress. The score could also reflect the fact that you have poor coping mechanisms and that you put too much pressure on yourself - you should consider changing certain unhealthy habits in your lifestyle if this is the case. Relax. You'd only be making things worse if you don't take time to assess your situation. Try to single out the factors that are causing you stress, and then take the appropriate means to deal with these factors. Strengthen your existing relationships and make new ones - healthy relationships serve as one of the most effective forms of curative psychotherapy known to man. It would be a good idea to look back on the items where you scored low and take some steps to improve on them.

35-50: If you scored around this range, your body can still compensate for the stress you are putting on it - but you're almost at your limit. Ideally, you should start working on the areas where you scored low and take measures to avoid a breakdown. If you can't avoid the factors that contribute to the deterioration of your mental health it would be advisable to bolster your body. Eat better, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. It's a fact that your mental health goes hand in hand with your physical health and a healthier person will usually be better equipped to deal with stress if and when it comes.

50-65: A score in this range would mean that you're capable of coping with stress to a good degree and you're relatively comfortable with your lifestyle. It would be a good idea to start actively take measures to bolster your health as well as your relationships. You can also fine-tune your schedule by organizing it if you haven't already. This should further improve on reducing stressors in your environment because if things play out the way you have planned them, naturally this would mean that you would be comfortable.

65 and above: Congratulations! You are the kind of person who can easily adapt to problems and thus, you most probably treat stress as a challenge rather than a problem. You're probably also aware of your physical well-being and you actively maintain or pursue a healthy lifestyle. You have few problems with coping with stress and you probably use various outlets to release any built-up tension.

Of course, a drastic change of lifestyle isn't necessary when you're trying to fix the little things. Now that you have a better idea of what exactly causes your stress problems, you can do a little extra reading about it and decide for yourself how best to address it.
